Description
The Free Church on West Quality Street in Dysart was built in 1845 and later converted into a Masonic Hall in 1899 by D Forbes Smith. This tall, single-storey building features five bays and a piend roof, situated on a corner site within an irregular terrace to the west. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished margins and quoin strips, and includes base and eaves courses along with architraved, pointed-arch openings.
On the north elevation, the central three bays contain tall windows, while the slightly advanced outer bays have pediments. The right outer bay features a moulded doorcase with a stepped hoodmould that includes the inscription "MASONIC HALL. PRESENTED BY THE RIGHT HONOURABLE EARL OF ROSSLYN 1890," along with a pointed-arch opening above and a louvered oculus in the pediment. The left outer bay is splayed and has a tall window and an oculus adorned with Freemasons compasses in its finialled pediment. A pyramid-capped, rectangular louvered ridge vent is located at the centre, with a modern rooflight to the right.
The east elevation has two tall windows and a recessed dry-dashed screen wall of the rear wing on the outer left. The south elevation features a catslide roof of the dry-dashed rear wing that abuts the eaves line. All windows are currently blocked. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans, ashlar-coped skews, and ball and spike finials.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
