Description

5 Burnside in Auchtermuchty is an irregular pair of two-storey, three-bay L-plan terraced houses built in the early to earlier 19th century, with some later alterations. The buildings are constructed from coursed whinstone, featuring predominantly long and short sandstone dressings. The door and window openings of No 3 have stop-chamfered details, while No 5 has a base course and a broadly pilastered and corniced doorpiece with a blocking course that is painted white. The ground floor of both houses has later bipartite windows, except for the right bay of No 5.

The west elevation of No 3 is symmetrical, featuring a central door flanked by outer bays and adjoining No 5 to the north. No 5 has a near-symmetrical appearance with a central doorway that includes a doorpiece. The south elevation of No 3 has a blank gable that is harled where it previously adjoined another property. The north elevation of No 5 is rendered and lined out, with a window located on the first floor to the right.

The east elevation of No 3 is three-bay and harled, with a single-storey wing projecting to the east. No 5 also has a three-bay design with a polygonal piended dormer on the outer left. The openings have been altered, including a modern oculus, and there is a long low single-storey wing projecting to the east with a monopitch roof.

The glazing types vary, with predominantly timber sash and case windows on the street elevation featuring 4-pane, plate glass, and 4-pane over 2-pane configurations; No 5 has 8-pane glazing on the north side. The rear windows are mostly modern. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and No 5 has a corniced gable stack, a corniced ridge stack at the division of the properties, and an off-centre eaves stack on the east elevation of No 3.

The interior of No 3 has not been seen, while No 5 has been modernised.
