Description
Thornbank is an early 19th century cottage with an attached steading range. During the mid-19th century, the cottage was enlarged and raised to two storeys. It is now a two-storey, three-bay farmhouse with a projecting gabled porch at the centre, topped with a corn-sheaf finial. Gabled wallhead dormers are positioned over the outer bays. The farmhouse is constructed of stugged ashlar and has gabled, slated roofs, with rectangular end stacks featuring a cavetto cornice. An inscription "IDFW 1807" is carved into a stone set to the left of the front door. A single-storey extension with a single-pitch roof and a large octagonal corner stack is attached to the west.
To the east is a long, single-storey range with a pantiled roof and rubble walls, joined to a two-storey block with double gabled pantiled roofs at the east end. Two-storey, piended, pantiled blocks project to the south at both the east and west ends. A second single-storey, pantiled range, running parallel to the first, connects to the eastern projecting block on its west side. The steading is not depicted on the 1856 Ordnance Survey map.
