Description

Kemback Parish Church is a Gothick-style building dating from 1814. It comprises a three-bay rectangular structure with a later single-story porch added to the south end. The exterior is constructed of coursed squared and droved rubble with droved ashlar dressings and a plinth, all covered with a gabled slate roof. A bellcote is situated at the south gable, featuring a single gothic arch on each face supporting a spirelet with a crocketted finial. The west front has three tall gothic windows with set-back chamfered reveals, featuring Y-tracery carried on slender clustered shafts, further subdivided by astragals, intersecting at the head. Two similar windows are present in the north wall. The east and south walls are windowless. Inside, a gallery is located on the south side, and the pulpit is positioned in the northeast corner. The simple plasterwork includes a cornice and a small round-headed niche at the north end of the south wall. The church is part of a group with Hillside Cottage (item 21) and Kemback Beg (items 18 and 19). Further information can be found in Hay’s “Post Reformation Churches.”
