Description

Inverkeithing East and West Harbour is a small, narrow harbour built from rubble, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with later alterations and repairs. It is situated on a north-south axis to the northeast of Inverkeithing Bay, at the point where Keithing Burn flows into the bay. The burn enters the head of the harbour through a square bull-faced rubble sluice that was installed in 1840, which has undergone later brick repairs. A 20th-century metal footbridge crosses over the sluice, where the Halbeath Railway once crossed the burn, supported by a large steel girder that runs at an angle to the footbridge.

The quay walls on the east and west sides of the harbour are made of coursed, squared rubble and random rubble, with extensive concrete render repairs. The east quay measures 99 meters in length, while the west quay is 172 meters long, featuring stone steps and some iron fixtures, such as rope hooks. The west quay ends at a squat, round-edged coursed rubble pier, formerly known as Mid-Pier, which was the terminus of the Halbeath Waggon Way. There is an additional harbour inlet to the west of Mid-Pier, previously known as West Harbour, which was filled in 2003. Remnants of a 19th-century rubble wall from former shipbuilding works can be found on the east quay, which has been incorporated into a small marina established in 2003. A coped random rubble wall borders the north side of the sluice along Keithing Burn to the west, terminating at Commercial Road Bridge.
