Description
Blackhall Farmhouse dates from the early 19th century and has undergone additions and alterations over time. It is a two-storey farmhouse with a rectangular plan, to which a lower wing is attached to the east. Further single and two-storey flat-roofed additions and a single-storey service wing are situated to the north.
The original main block is of a plain classical design, characterised by a symmetrical south (principal) elevation. A large, probably later, flat-roofed entrance porch with droved ashlar dressings and a band course is centrally positioned. The porch features a panelled timber door with a three-light rectangular fanlight and a window to its right return. Windows are set back on either side of the elevation to each floor, and one window is above the porch. The lower-height wing adjoins the south elevation to the right, featuring a large window to the left of its centre.
The north elevation shows a stair window set back centrally on the original main block. A later 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed addition projects forward below this window. A single-storey service wing, with a single-pitch roof, adjoins at right angles to the right, featuring an entrance and a window to its left return. An earlier 20th-century two-storey flat-roofed extension is set forward to the left of the stair window, including an architraved entrance, a panelled timber door, a window to the left, and two windows on the first floor. A later 20th-century garage adjoins and projects forward to the outer left, partially obscuring the east wing.
The east elevation has a window on both the lower and upper levels of the east wing, with a further 20th-century window set to the right. The west elevation displays a window to the left of the first floor on the original main block, with a blocked opening below. A combined inserted entrance and window are visible on the single-storey service wing adjoining to the left, together with a window to the outer left.
The majority of windows are 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are grey slate, with those on the original main block and east wing being piended. Coped, slightly stepped, finely coursed sandstone wallhead stacks are positioned on either side (east and west) of the main block. A harled, coped, shouldered wallhead stack is located on the earlier 20th-century two-storey extension to the north, topped with round cans.
The interior has been extensively modernised and few early or original features remain.
