Description
Kate Randall's Cottage, located at The Murrel, dates back to the late 18th century and has undergone later additions. It is a single-storey, three-bay cottage on the west side, which is adjoined to the east by a former two-bay cottage that has been converted from a full-depth, full-height stable. There are remains of a recessed byre on the west gable. The building features random rubble construction, with a lime-washed south elevation and droved dressings to the openings and quoins on the south side.
On the south (principal) elevation, the cottage presents a symmetrical appearance with a central door flanked by windows. The stable has a door to the left and a window to the right. The east elevation shows a plain gable wall with raggles of a lean-to at the centre and left. The north elevation of the cottage includes a larger inserted window flanked by smaller, simple window openings, while the stable has a blocked window to the right. The west elevation features the remains of a ruined outbuilding towards the centre left.
The cottage has a two-leaf timber door, although one leaf is missing as of 2002, and the stable has a boarded timber door. The principal elevation and the rear central window have timber sash and case windows, all of which are missing glass panes (as of 2002). There are small casement windows at the rear with intact glass panes (as of 2002) and remains of external timber shutters on the principal elevation. The roof is pitched and covered with clay pantiles, featuring raised coped skews and gable apex stacks with thackstanes.
Inside the cottage, the interior has been gutted, leading from the entrance into a small hallway. There are doorways that lead off to rooms at the gable ends and a doorway leading to a central narrow room that extends to the rear. The fireplace openings are located on the east and west gable walls, with presses flanking these openings, although the doors are missing (as of 2002). The room to the east has a simple timber framework forming a bed recess, which is lit by a small window with a scalloped pelmet at the rear. The stable features timber stall divisions, with four along the north wall and one on the south wall. There is a small window in the upper west gable and a blocked fire opening flanked by a recess on the east gable. The roof is a plain collar-rafter design.
