Description
The Old Schoolhouse at Barnyards is believed to date to around 1800. Originally built as a two-story, three-window structure, it was substantially reconstructed around 1845 into a three-story, four-window building, featuring a gambrel roof at the east gable. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with droved dressings. A Roman Doric pilaster surrounds the doorway, and the gables and rear elevation are harled. A tall stair window is located at the rear. The interior retains pleasant original features. Local tradition suggests it may have served as a Secession Manse. Evidence suggests a construction date shortly after 1825, which may be slightly later than previously thought. The statutory address includes the schoolhouse and its garden walls.
