Description
Mary Somerville's House, located at 31-32 Somerville Square in Burntisland, is a 17th-century tenement that has undergone later alterations, particularly at the rear. This three-storey building features a prominent chimney stack facing the street and is part of an irregular terrace to the west. The exterior is harled with painted margins.
The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, has widely spaced bays and a significant amount of blank wall. It includes a panelled timber door situated beneath a commemorative plaque, with an advanced chimney breast that rises into a substantial shouldered stack at the wallhead. There are panelled timber doors on both the right and left sides, with the left one having been altered from a window opening. The fenestration above is regular in the left bay, while the right bay has an off-line window above that has been enlarged on the second floor. A small second-floor window, a later addition, is located in the jettied wallplane to the left of the stack, along with windows in the outer right bay on the first and second floors.
The south elevation features a flight of stairs leading to a part-glazed door, which is a modern alteration, accompanied by an adjacent light to the left on the first floor. There are five windows to the right at ground level and six windows to the right on both the first and second floors, with an additional window to the left on the second floor.
On the east elevation, there are windows located in the outer right section on the second floor. The building has a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows throughout, grey slate roofing, and ashlar coped skews, crowsteps, and thackstanes, along with coped ashlar stacks topped with cans.
