Description
St Mary's Farmhouse and Steading is an earlier to mid-19th century single-storey, three-bay farmhouse constructed from ashlar stone with polished dressings and rusticated quoins. The central door is recessed and features a decorative fanlight, supported by a Roman Doric columned doorpiece. The windows are 12-pane sashes, and the building has straight skews, end stacks, and a slate roof. A gabled wing extends to the north, creating a T-plan layout.
To the north of the farmhouse is an asymmetrical steading that was built in stages during the first half of the 19th century. This single-storey structure includes some lofts and is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings. The main steading block has a Z-plan layout and is connected to a block to the east of the house by a segmental-arched opening, which forms an enclosed L-plan courtyard. The courtyard elevation of the range parallel to the house features four arcaded segmental-arched cart openings, with three bays to the right that are taller and include lofts. There is a variety of openings on the other elevations, and the roofs are covered with pantiles. An octagonal horsemill, linked to the northeast, is also rubble-built, with its openings blocked with brick and a faceted pantile roof.
