Description
125 High Street in Dunfermline is a free classical commercial building designed by Thomas Hyslop Ure in 1909. It has three storeys and an attic, with a single bay and is terraced. The principal elevation is made of red sandstone ashlar.
On the north-facing principal elevation, the ground floor features a late 20th-century shop front that extends into the adjacent property on the right, topped with a moulded cornice. The first and second floors are enclosed within a pilastered surround, which has moulded projecting cornices above and below; the lower cornice is mutuled while the upper one at eaves level is modillioned. The elevation has narrow, alternating projecting blocks next to the pilasters, creating a slightly rusticated effect, with garlanded oval panels at the top of each pilaster. The centre of the elevation features a recessed canted bay with three-light architraved windows, both having aprons, and the lower window includes a cornice above the central light. The attic has a shouldered gable with flanking pilasters and a moulded cornice, along with a segmental-headed window that has a moulded architrave and keystone at the centre.
The first and second floors have 2-pane timber sash and case windows, while the attic features a 12-pane timber casement window. The building is topped with a steeply pitched grey slate roof that is flattened at the apex. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
