Description
This early 19th century building, extended in the later 19th century, is a two-storey with attic and basement structure, with a three-bay main block and a single-bay extension to the west. It was originally built as a bank and exhibits a symmetrical classical design, highlighted by a prominent Doric entrancepiece. The principal (south) and west elevations are faced with lightly droved sandstone ashlar, while the remaining elevations have coursed stugged sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. A band course runs above the basement windows on the south elevation of the main block, and another is located at the first floor sill level. The building features a moulded eaves cornice, a base course, a moulded cornice and a parapet to the extension.
The south (principal) elevation has steps leading to a central entrancepiece framed by Doric columns supporting a slightly projecting pediment. The door is flanked by pilasters, with a dentilled frieze that continues on either side. The doorway itself has narrow flanking lights and a 6-panel, two-leaf timber door with a rectangular fanlight. Windows flank the entrance, and a single window is found on the extension to the outer left. Windows are present in each bay on the first floor. Piended dormers are set into the roof on either side.
The west elevation features a central entrance to the extension with a pediment supported on scrolled brackets. This entrance has a 6-panel, two-leaf timber door, and rectangular fanlight. Flanking the door are two-light windows with stone mullions, bracketed sills, and corniced friezes. An attic window is set back to the left of the main block.
The east and north elevations have more modern alterations. The east elevation includes modern steps with a parapet wall, a part-glazed timber door and a single storey gabled extension on the right. The north elevation has blocked ground floor openings, with windows to the centre and left of the first floor, and an adjoining building on the right.
The building originally had mainly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and grey slate roofs. The gable end stacks are constructed of droved ashlar, with moulded coping, and round cans. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
