Description
Datie Mill Cottage is an earlier 19th-century Spanish-style cottage, originally part of the Datie Mill complex. It is a single-storey, three-bay building with a piend roof. The walls are constructed of rubble with raised dressed quoin strips and margins. The north elevation features an advanced gabled bay centrally, containing a window that may have previously been a doorway, a small window in the gablehead, and further windows in the flanking bays. A modern veranda extends to the right of the centre on the north side. The west elevation shows a window in the bay to the left of the centre and a modern two-leaf small-pane door to the right, accompanied by a full-width modern veranda supported by timber posts and dwarf walls. The east and north elevations were not visible in a 1999 survey. The windows have small-pane horizontal glazing patterns, all fitted with external louvered shutters. The roof is covered in grey slates, and the building has dressed ashlar polygonal ridge stacks. Overhanging eaves display carved bargeboards.
Datie Mill itself dates to the 18th century. It is a rubble-built, single and two-storey, L-shaped mill with a piended and pantiled roof, characterised by diamond-pattern casement windows. The cottage was formerly listed as Datie Mill Cottage, and the mill was originally known as Daughty's Mill. The statutory address for both buildings is Spanish Cottage and Datie Mill. References connect the site to North School Kirkcaldy and Beveridge Park (1986).
