Description

This is a row of two traditional, rectangular-plan houses dated 1771 and 1778, prominently situated near the centre of North Queensferry village. Brae House occupies the eastern end of the row, with White House to the west.

Brae House is rendered with painted margins and features an inscribed lintel above the front door reading "TB 1771". It has non-traditional dormers to the front and late 20th-century pitched and flat-roofed extensions to the rear. White House has a rendered south elevation, harled north and west sides, and blue painted margins. A three-faced sundial, corbelled from the party wall and dated 1778, sits on the south elevation. The ground slopes down to the south.

The south elevation features the sundial, a modern door flanked by windows at Brae House, and a windowed first floor. Modern three-light dormers have been added to the attic of Brae House. White House has a central replacement door flanked by windows, with a windowed first floor set close to the eaves. The eastern elevation shows a window at first-floor level and a modern extension to the right. The rear (north) elevation rises over high ground, with access to the lower levels via a moat. Brae House has modern pitched and flat-roofed extensions at first floor level. White House has a first-floor door off-centre left, providing a gangway to the higher ground, with two ground floor windows flanking the doorway. A modern window is inserted to the far right of the western elevation, and a small attic window is located to the left.

The houses have non-traditional windows throughout. Brae House has pitched roofs covered in graded grey slates, while White House has replacement man-made slates. Ashlar coped skews are present, with moulded skewputts to the south and beaked skewputts to the north. The gable ends have coped, harled stacks, centred and to the west, with the eastern stack rendered.

The interior of White House lacks original features, and the interior of Brae House was not inspected in 2002. The initials "TB" on Brae House refer to Thomas Brown, a shipmaster. Access to the upper levels of the houses was likely located at the rear, and a ramp remains in place at the rear of White House.
