Description
27 Coal Wynd in Kirkcaldy is a tall single-storey building with a raised basement, designed by William Williamson between 1909 and 1910. It features a near-rectangular Baroque-fronted hall that was converted into a dance studio in 1996. The exterior is harled with ashlar dressings on the main elevation.
The north (principal) elevation has four bays, with channelled quoins, a pulvinated frieze, a mutule cornice, and a blocking course. There is a canted ashlar porch on the outer right, which includes a roll-moulded doorway framed by an architrave and topped with a cornice. The entrance has two-leaf panelled doors and an oculus adorned with a husk garland above. The windows in the remaining three bays are set in ashlar panels, featuring moulded cills on the principal floor and a band course on the lower floor.
The east elevation also has four bays, separated by pilasters on the principal floor, with segmental-arched windows and a moulded course that divides the storeys. There is a projection on the outer left that includes a door at ground level, along with a moulded eaves course.
On the west elevation, there is a tall round-arched window on the outer left, accompanied by a stack. The building has modern small-pane glazing and a grey slate piended roof, with coped harled stacks.
The interior is modern. Additionally, there are decorative wrought-iron railings that protect the falling ground to the north, featuring stylised ashlar gatepiers and two-leaf gates.
