Description
Dalginch Farmsteading with Horse Mill dates from the early to mid-19th century and features a rectangular-plan, traditional courtyard steading with a horse mill and a projecting west wing. The building is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble with dressed ashlar quoins and voussoirs, along with whinstone rubble that has contrasting ashlar dressings.
The east range consists of a pantiled, double-pitched byre running north to south. The courtyard elevation on the west side has a recessed bay with a segmental cart arch on the outer left and a broad opening on the outer right. The south elevation includes a pedestrian opening to the right with a small piended projection beyond.
On the east elevation, there is a variety of openings, including a semi-derelict range projecting to the outer right. The north range features a slated cartshed and granary. The south courtyard elevation has five segmental cart arches with hayloft openings above, and a larger opening over the center arch.
The west range includes a two-storey corrugated structure to the north and a lower slated range to the south, which is likely altered. The east courtyard elevation shows a variety of openings, including a full-height sliding timber door to the right of center and a partly blocked segmental arch in the lower bay to the left. The lower bay projects to the outer left.
The south elevation has a piend-roofed bay with a door to the left and a small opening above the center, along with a lower blank recessed bay to the right of center. The west elevation features bays to the left of center with tiny arrowslit-type openings and the horse mill on the outer left. To the right, there are bays with a sliding timber door leading to a segmental cart arch, another door on the outer right, and two tiny openings above.
The horse mill is circular, topped with a slated conical roof and supported by broad piers made of large blocks of squared sandstone rubble. Three openings are blocked with timber, while the fourth opening to the south remains open. The projecting west range is likely later, featuring a tiled whinstone structure and a slightly higher pantiled range with a variety of openings to the south, including two partly blocked segmental arches.
