Description
Carriden House Stables in Bo'ness is an early 19th-century courtyard plan classical stable and steading, which has been partially converted into housing. The eastern elevation features coursed tooled sandstone, while the other elevations are mainly constructed of coursed sandstone rubble. The clock tower and the advanced end bays of the eastern range have piended roofs.
The eastern elevation is symmetrical and consists of seven bays, with a central two-stage advanced rectangular clock tower that has string courses and oculi on all faces at the first floor, although these are now blocked or empty. There is a cart arch at ground level with a two-leaf timber door. The two-storey end bays are advanced and have cart arches at ground level, which now feature modern glazing.
The northern range is a single-storey structure that is now roofless, containing a central three-bay farm worker's cottage flanked by a former laundry on the left and a possible cow shed on the right.
The western range is a two-storey steading and hayloft that is also roofless and floorless, with an advanced bay to the left featuring a cart arch opening at ground level. There is another cart arch opening to the far left, and predominantly arrow slit openings on both the ground and first floors. The western elevation has severely dilapidated outbuildings that include a mill and mill wheel with machinery, which are now overgrown.
Within the courtyard, there is a long single-storey ancillary building with a low-pitched roof sloping to the south. It has an arched opening to the west and is predominantly open to the south, supported by a single massive square stone pier. The roof is made of corrugated iron and felt. To the northeast, there is a later small single-storey sandstone rubble building with a pitched roof, which was formerly a potting shed and is in some disrepair.
The interior of the eastern range has been comprehensively modernised to create housing, except for the clock tower.
