Description
St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, located on Providence Brae in Bo'Ness, was built in 1796 by the mason Nisbet of Edinburgh. The church features a simple rectangular plan typical of Burgher churches. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and quoin strips, and includes a band course and pointed-arch openings with stone mullions.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a center bay with a small window in a lean-to stone porch, and a door located on the right side. Above the porch is a Venetian-style window with a pointed-arch center light, topped with a stone cross gablehead finial.
On the northeast elevation, there are two large windows that are regularly spaced, along with a smaller window on the outer left. The east elevation mirrors the Venetian-style window found on the west. The south elevation, which is adjacent to the Liberal Hall, has been altered and features two large Y-traceried windows in the center and two smaller vertically-aligned windows to the left.
All openings on the church are currently blocked or unglazed, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring ashlar-coped skews. The property is enclosed by a low coped rubble boundary wall, which includes a flat-coped square-section gatepier.
