Description

This building is a tall, two-storey hall with a part cellar, located at 37 Stewart Avenue in Bo'Ness. It was designed by J McKissock and W G Rowan in 1884 and features a Scots Jacobean style. The hall has five bays, crowstepped gables, and a balustraded balcony. The principal elevation includes a slightly advanced gabled bay at the center and left, featuring a broad doorway with a two-leaf boarded timber door on the left and a narrow window on the right. Above, a corbelled and balustraded balcony leads to two triangular-pedimented windows flanking a small light, topped by a ball-finialled gablehead with a moulded datestone. The right side has regular fenestration across two bays, while the left has a single bay with boarded windows.

On the west elevation, there is an advanced gabled bay at the center with a tall tripartite window at the ground level and a nine-part transomed window above, which breaks into the gablehead featuring an arrowslit. Each of the flanking re-entrants has a single window on each floor of narrow angled gabled bays, although all windows are blocked. The east elevation is plain with a gablehead stack that has been truncated. The north elevation shows asymmetrical fenestration and is almost adjacent to St Mary's Church.

The interior includes moulded cornices, a part-glazed screen door, and a dog-leg staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters. There are timber fireplaces, including one in the ground floor east room with an overmantel. The principal first-floor hall features a coombed ceiling and a segmentally-arched window. The windows throughout have plate glass glazing, some with obscured glass, and are set in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the skews are ashlar-coped.
