Former Foundry Offices, 62 Union Street

The Former Foundry Offices at 62 Union Street, built in 1908 by Matthew Steele, is a two-storey, five-bay building that has been converted into cafés and a dwelling. It features Art Nouveau details and is constructed of squared bull-faced rubble with droved ashlar margins, while the rear is harled. The building has a mutuled eaves cornice and a blocking course, with recessed bays and stone transoms and mullions.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, the dominant entrance is located in the bay to the left of center. This entrance is recessed and breaks the eaves into a crenellated parapet, featuring a segmental-pedimented doorpiece with a two-leaf part-glazed timber door, a raked lintel, and a stone-mullioned three-part fanlight above. There is a bipartite window on the first floor. To the right of center, there is another door with a bowed crenellated doorhead, with a single window above it. The remaining bays have broad bowed tripartite windows set in recessed panels on both floors, and the outer bay to the right has a bowed crenellated doorhead.

The east (corner) elevation features canted windows on each floor of the angled bay, which has a crenellated parapet and a set-back mock half-timbered gable.

The southeast (Dock Street) elevation consists of a single bay with a bowed tripartite window in a recessed panel, similar to the others.

The southwest (rear) elevation has a variety of elements due to alterations, including a projecting asymmetrical gable on the outer right, a four-light transomed stair window, and a further projecting bay to the left with an out-of-character dormer extension.

The northwest elevation is a blank gabled wall. The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in timber sash and case frames, while the rear has uPVC glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates and features ashlar-coped skews, along with two modern rooflights on the right side of the northeast elevation. Decorative cast-iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers are also present.

Inside, the building has been converted into cafés on each floor, with some interior fittings retained in the ground floor left office.
