Description
The Assembly Rooms on Church Street in Dunbar were built in 1822 and feature two stories with a substantial basement. The exterior is constructed from coursed ironstone rubble, accented with droved Catcraig ashlar quoins, and topped with a piended slate roof.
The west entrance front consists of five bays, highlighted by an arched doorway in the second bay above the basement bridge, which has double doors. There are steps leading down to the basement. The ground floor has tall blind windows with sash frames, and there are also blind windows above. The side elevation is blank, with wallhead stacks.
The rear east elevation also has five bays. The basement has been altered for habitation, while the left side features three generous ground floor sash windows that serve the ballroom. The fifth bay on the first floor has a tripartite arrangement of multi-pane sashes.
Inside, there is a kitchen to the north of the ground floor, with an entrance and staircase adjoining it, and a supper room above. The former ballroom is located to the south and includes a bowed balcony off the staircase landing, a high ceiling that is coved, and a boldly moulded cornice. Decorative wrought-iron railings adorn the west front.
