Description
The building is a large double lectern dovecot from the 18th century, constructed of rubble red Bourhouse sandstone, which was formerly harled. It measures 32 feet by 16 feet in plan and features a string course.
On the southeast elevation, there are two segmentally arched doorways with small openings above them. The grey slated roof has a crowstepped division at the center, which is broken horizontally at the mid-point by a row of 34 flight holes. There are pointed arched openings above the string courses on the east and west crowstepped elevations, while the rear is blank.
Inside, the dividing wall is 3 feet thick, with the lower part having a ceiling height of 8 feet; this area was formerly used as a stable. The dovecot currently accommodates 946 nests, down from the original 1,402.
