1-2 Mitchell's Close, Haddington

1-2 Mitchell's Close in Haddington is a 17th-century tenement building that stands three storeys high with an attic and features five bays and a crowstepped design. It is part of an irregular terrace and is constructed from rubble with roughly squared rubble dressings, some of which have been renewed. The building displays chamfered and roll-moulded arrises.

The northern entrance elevation has a ground floor that includes a boarded timber door located to the left of centre, accompanied by two small square windows that are not aligned. To the right, there is a part-glazed timber door with a square window beneath a relieving arch, which has been altered from a door, and this is adjacent to a low projecting buttress. Each floor above features four grouped windows, and there are three catslide-roofed slate-hung dormers above. A projecting stair tower is located to the outer left, which connects to a pend entrance from Market Street. This stair tower has a panelled timber door at the ground level, small windows on each floor of the oblique return to the right, and a polygonal roof above.

On the western elevation, there is a small modern window to the left of the crowstepped gable, which rises above the separately listed Nos 5 and 6 Mitchell's Close. The building has timber sash and case windows with 6- and 12-pane glazing patterns, and the stair tower features fixed 6-pane glazing. The roof is made of pantiles, with the stair tower being slated, and there is a coped rubble gablehead stack.
