Description
1-2 Widows Row in Tyninghame is a group of five single-storey, three-bay cottages built around 1840 by Thomas Hannan, incorporating earlier cottages. The cottages are arranged in a U-plan, mirrored about the center. They are constructed of squared and snecked pink rubble with stugged ashlar dressings.
The street elevation features a detached cottage at the center (No 3) with a pilastered doorpiece that has a weathered inscription reading "Rebuilt 1840" and a gable head that breaks the eaves above, along with ashlar skews. On either side of this central cottage are two semi-detached cottages arranged in L-plans, each with stone-bracketed slab canopies over the doorways and flanking bipartite windows. An additional window has been inserted in the re-entrant angle of No 1.
The rear elevations have irregular openings, some of which have been altered with rendered margins. The side elevations also feature similarly irregular openings. The cottages have a 4-pane glazing pattern with timber mullions in the bipartite windows. The raised skews are complemented by ashlar stacks with thackstanes, and the roofs are covered with pantiles.
