Description
77 Market Street in Haddington is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, four-bay commercial building that includes a tenement flat on the upper floors. It is located at the corner of an island block in the center of town. The principal (north) elevation features a segmental-arched entrance with a corniced, decorative corbelled hoodmould that has a heart crest to the left. The northeast corner is chamfered, and there is a central shouldered wallhead stack. The principal elevation is made of coursed sandstone blocks, while the ground floor is painted and rendered, topped with a plain eaves cornice. The side elevation is constructed from coursed rubble. The building has stop-chamfered sandstone dressings and angled stone cills for the tall first-floor windows and smaller second-floor windows. There is a corniced entrance to an exterior pend on the far left of the side elevation, which connects to a warehouse at the rear.
The principal elevation has four-pane timber sash and case windows with horns, while the side elevation features a two-over-four glazing pattern. The shop front includes six-pane fixed lights. The entrance door to the tenement stair (number 78) is a four-panel design, and there are timber and glazed bi-fold outer doors leading to the former shop at number 77. The roof is piended with slate, and the cast-iron rainwater goods have decorative squared hoppers.
Inside, the tenement stair to the upper floors has a stone slab floor, a dado rail, and decorative cast-iron banisters. The first and second floors have been modernized to create commercial premises and residential accommodation, complete with internal timber shutters.
