Description

1 North Street in Belhaven, Dunbar, is a late 17th century T-plan house that stands two storeys high with an attic. The main block runs east-west, with a shallower arm extending to the south. The building is constructed of harled sandstone rubble with ashlar margins and raised cills. It features a pantiled roof with slate eaves, a red tiled turret, and roofs over the porch and oriel. The gable stacks are harled, and the plain copings include a sundial on the west skew of the south gable.

The entrance is located in the west re-entrant angle, leading into the stair turret through a semi-circular porch addition. It has a flush panelled door and a fanlight strip. There is a turret window at the eaves level and a bipartite window inserted to the south of the porch, with a first-floor window above it. The north street gable has two bays with windows on each floor and two small gable head lights. The south and east gables are blank, featuring gable head windows.

The east wing includes a segmentally curved 20th century oriel addition to the south, which has small-pane casement windows on the left. Inside, most of the earlier features have been removed. The stair and plan form date from the 19th century, with remnants of a newel stair leading to the attic. There is a blocked finely moulded door surround in the north wall, a late 17th century chimney on the south wall of the east wing, and the remains of a bull-nosed fireplace lintel concealed behind the stair. Some fragments of plaster cornice remain.

Additionally, there is a garden wall to the south that curves at the southwest corner.
