Description

The lodge and gate piers at Eventyr, Longniddry, were designed in 1935 by Ian G Lindsay of Orphoot, Whiting and Lindsay, with later additions also by Lindsay. The building is a classically detailed, rectangular, two-storey, five-bay house with diminutive quadrant and curtain walls attaching to it, subsequently altered to create two pavilions; one with a flat roof and the other raised to two-storeys. The exterior is white harl with contrasting ashlar cills.

The northeast elevation is nearly symmetrical, featuring a wide, advanced bay with a pediment at the centre, a simple heystone, and a bracketed canopy. Above the entrance is a tall stair window and the date within a tympanum. Recessed bays on either side contain a single window and a quasi-Venetian window at ground floor level, and two narrow windows flanking the central bay at the first floor, with an additional first-floor window to the outer left. The pavilions have courtyard walls to the southeast, partly raised to two-storeys with a polygonal roof; single windows are set into the concave bay (formerly a quadrant) to the northeast at both floor levels, flanked by timber mullioned tripartite windows. A flat-roofed addition to the northwest was formed from former walls, creating a three-bay facade with pilasters flanking the bays, an armorial plaque in the centre bay, and a round-arched window in each outer bay.

The southwest elevation is seven bays wide, with a ground floor later advanced as a flat-roofed extension featuring a cast-iron balcony. A central door has a bracketed canopy, with a 12-pane glazed door incorporating shaped astragals. Three windows flank the door on either side at ground floor level. Glazed doors are set into the balcony at the first-floor centre and outer bays, with two windows between. A variety of glazing patterns are present, mostly consisting of sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, alongside some small-pane casements and top-hopper windows. The roof is covered in grey-green slates with ashlar coped stacks and original cans. A single-storey, harled lodge is situated to the south.

Boundary walls are built of coped rubble and include those of the wider Gosford estate. The gate piers are square, made from stugged ashlar, and have wooden gates. An extension to the ground floor was added by the architect when the original accommodation proved insufficient, which slightly altered the original design's proportions. The statutory address is Longniddry Lyars Road Eventyr with Retaining Walls Lodge and Gatepiers.
