Description
The Methodist Chapel on Edinburgh Road in Tranent was built in 1878, with a small modern extension at the rear. This small church features a simple yet elegant neo-Romanesque style, characterized by its symmetrical design. The main front elevation is made of hammer-faced brown sandstone ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed from random rubble, with a base course.
The northern front elevation has a three-bay gable, which includes a central round-arched doorway set in an advanced gabled porch with an open pediment. The door is four-panelled, with two leaves and a semicircular fanlight that has a geometric pattern. On either side of the doorway, there are tall round-arched windows. The gablehead features an open pediment with a dentilled course below the skew and a central plaque. Both the eastern and western elevations have two tall round-arched windows each. The rear (southern) gable has a flat-roofed harled extension attached.
The windows are timber sash and case style, adorned with coloured border glazing. The roof is covered with ungraded grey Welsh slates, and there are ashlar skews along with a small chimney stack that has a single vent on the rear gable.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The boundary walls are made of rubble with a coping, featuring a dwarf wall at the front with modern railings and round-arched heads at the terminal piers.
