Description

Cockenzie Harbour is a tidal harbour designed by engineer Robert Stevenson in 1835, which incorporates part of an earlier harbour from the 17th century. The harbour has an irregular polygonal shape. The western pier serves as a breakwater and is primarily constructed of hammer-faced squared and coursed rubble, featuring a central section made of old vertically coursed rubble. The eastern pier is larger and has an L-shaped design, built from squared and coursed rubble, with a 5-foot wall on the seaward side. The western pier was altered in the late 19th century.
