Description

The Old Parish Church, located at 44 High Street in Cockenzie and Port Seton, was built in 1838. It is a simple gabled church designed in a two-bay rectangular shape, featuring a lean-to vestibule at the east gable and a vestry added as a 20th-century lean-to extension to the north. The church is constructed from cream and red sandstone rubble, with dressings that are droved and chamfered but showing signs of erosion. The stonework has raised margins and much of it has been patched or replaced with artificial stone. There are relieving arches and a base course present.

On the south elevation, there are two tall bipartite windows with hood moulds. The main entrance consists of a two-leaf door with a moulded surround, which is offset to the right (east) and is situated under a low screen wall with consoled ends. The north elevation also features two tall bipartite windows with hood moulds, although the leftmost window is foreshortened. Modern lean-to extensions with doors and windows occupy most of the lower level.

The west elevation has two tall bipartite windows that are symmetrical, located below a blind oculus in the gable head. The east elevation presents a symmetrical four-bay lean-to vestibule at ground level, with the outer bays advanced and each containing a single window, while the recessed bays have two windows. Above, there are tripartite windows with hood moulding, a blind oculus, and a small arched bellcote topped with a copper dome and weathervane. The vestibule windows are leaded in diamond panes, the tall windows are border-glazed, and stained glass is featured on the west elevation. The roof is covered in grey Welsh slate, with ridged skews and consoled skewputts.

Inside, the church has a typical Presbyterian layout, characterized by a simple design that includes a double aisle, a central pulpit positioned behind the communion table, and an organ located in the northwest corner. The decor is subdued and well-maintained.
