Description
The conservatory at Tyninghame House is part of an 18th century walled garden that spans 4 acres and features rounded corners to the north. To the east, there is a segmentally arched Gibbsian gateway, which includes a similarly arched decorative wrought-iron slip and pedestrian gate that is dated 1893. Above the keystone on the garden side, there is a lion statue on a corbel.
To the south, the garden has a cream ashlar pedimented classical gateway, which is adorned with moulded pilasters and a carved lintel featuring a central drop stone with the date 1666. The gateway has curved angles and a moulded cornice, along with decorative two-leaf wrought-iron gates.
The late 19th century conservatory, designed by MacKenzie and Moncur, is constructed of ashlar and is attached to the north wall at the center. It is supported by fluted cast-iron columns and has doorways on either side. There is also a rectangular tool shed that runs parallel to the conservatory along the outer walls.
In the garden, stone statues depicting mythological subjects are placed on decorative pedestals, flanking a central north-south yew walk. At the center, there is an ornate stone fountain with a basin and putti, which leads to a circular pond.
