Description

Bara Farm is a mid to later 19th-century, two-storey L-plan farmhouse, accompanied by a single-storey service wing that was later raised to two storeys, creating a U-plan layout. The farmhouse is built of squared and snecked sandstone with droved grey ashlar dressings, featuring chamfered arrises to the openings, raised base and eaves courses, and bull-face rendering to the first-floor addition. Stone mullions are present throughout.

The south elevation is asymmetrical with three bays. An advanced gable is located on the outer right, containing bipartites to each floor and a square panel within the gablehead. A gabled porch, supported by brackets, is set in the re-entrant angle, featuring a gabled hood over a pointed arched doorway, a diamond-pane fanlight, and a two-leaf door. A narrow window is visible on the south side, and a bipartite window is located at the first floor above the porch, projecting through a gabled dormerhead. A bipartite window and a similarly detailed first-floor window are found in the outer left bay.

The courtyard elevation shows the eaves of the south wing sweeping down at the centre, with lean-to outbuildings added. A small courtyard is closed off by a coped rubble wall with a gateway at the centre.

On the east elevation, windows are present at the centre of the original two-storey house on the left, with the first-floor window mirroring the detailing of the south elevation. To the right are three slightly recessed, irregularly grouped bays, where the eaves course of the former single-storey wing functions as a string course below the raised bays. A door on the outer right has been blocked and converted into a window. A blocked window is also present on the west elevation.

The windows are sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern, except for the bipartites, which have an 8-pane pattern to each light. The roof is covered in grey slates, with gable end stacks and ashlar coped skews incorporating consoled skewputts.

The garden walls are constructed of rubble with coped tops, incorporating swept quadrants by the gateway to the northeast.

The farmhouse is listed for its well-preserved status, dignified character, and attractive architectural details. A steading to the east is not included in the listing.
