Description
Belsis Cottage is a later 19th-century gardener's house located on the Ormiston Hall Estate. This two-storey building is constructed of coursed cream sandstone, though it features modern raised pointing and concrete repairs to the ashlar margins. The cottage has a cavetto cornice and three bays on the main elevation that are grouped towards the center. It includes a wide doorway with two-leaf doors, with windows in the flanking bays and on each floor above. The rear elevation is incorporated into the garden wall, and there is a single-storey piend roofed addition on the outer side, with a first-floor window above.
The windows are sash and case style, featuring a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the piend roof is covered with grey slates. The central stack is rendered and lined.
The walled garden is surrounded by high rubble cream sandstone walls with ashlar coping, enclosing a large garden that slopes to the south. It is connected to the gardener's cottage at the southeast corner, with additional garden space formed by inner walls at the same corner, which incorporate the side elevation of the cottage. The north wall has evenly spaced, coped, sett-off buttresses. There are segmentally arched wide entrances with ashlar surrounds and corniced pilasters. A pointed arch pedestrian entrance, currently blocked, features a rubble surround and a depressed arch niche above that contains a carved thistle.
