Description
West Lodge in Biel dates from around 1840 and is a small rectangular gate lodge designed in the Tudor style, with later additions at the rear. The building is constructed of stugged pink coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and chamfered reveals. The south elevation facing the drive is symmetrical with three bays, including a gabled porch above a four-centred doorway. The porch has lancet windows on its sides and a studded panelled door, with bipartite windows flanking the entrance.
The east and west elevations are gabled, with the west gable featuring a canted four-light bay with a parapet, while the east gable has a single window. Both gables have blind arrow slits at their apex. The north elevation includes a piend roofed addition to the right, which is sympathetic to the original design, along with modern additions that slightly encroach on the east gable. The ashlar parapets have gablet coping and skewputts. The four-centred windows, particularly those in the canted bay, are adorned with diamond-pane glazing, and the roof is covered with purple slates.
The gatepiers are square and made of stugged pink sandstone, featuring chamfered corners and pyramidal caps.
