Description
Scotch Corner, located at 3-5 Bank Street in Kilmarnock, is a two-storey and attic corner building dating from 1821. It features three bays facing Bank Street and a multi-bayed design along College Wynd. The exterior is constructed of harled rubble with painted window and angle margins, an eaves course, and a cornice.
On the southeast elevation, which is the principal front facing Bank Street, there is a shop front on the ground floor with a central recessed glazed door, flanked by painted columns and engaged timber pilasters at each end that support a shop sign. The right pilaster is load-bearing. The glazed window is cut back on the corner and continues onto the College Wynd elevation. The first floor has a regular arrangement of three bays, with an attic dormer above the left bay, and two bays on the right return.
The northeast elevation, facing College Wynd, features paired bipartite windows in the center of the ground floor, with a pair of doorways to the left and a vehicular entrance with a timber door to the right. The first floor has three regularly placed bays, and there is a flat-roofed bipartite attic dormer above the left-hand bay. The building is adjoined by neighboring structures on both the left and right returns.
The northwest elevation, or rear, was not visible as of 2001. The southwest elevation is adjacent to 7 Bank Street on the left side.
The building has four-pane windows with an opening pane on the first floor facing Bank Street, while College Wynd features replacement 12-pane fixed windows with a three-pane opening section at the top. The roof is piended with grey slate, including a three-light timber and zinc dormer on Bank Street and a flat-fronted two-light timber and zinc dormer on College Wynd. There is a stepped gablehead stack with a neck cope and a replacement can on the northeast gable.
Inside, the ground floor of 3 and 5 Bank Street is currently used as a modernized retail unit, specifically a toy shop, with accommodation above that spans one and a half storeys. The space at 8 College Wynd is also used for retail and residential purposes and retains original-sized windows on the first floor.
