Manager's House, Waterside Ironworks, Dalmellington

The Manager's House at the Waterside Ironworks in Dalmellington is a possibly designed by William Burn and David Bryce and was built by 1857, as indicated on the first edition Ordnance Survey map. This asymmetrical, two-storey villa-type house features simple "Jacobean" detailing. The moulded skews run horizontally over the angles, and the openings have margins and splayed ingoes. The bays are either gabled or have gabled first-floor dormer heads, with a mix of single and mullioned windows. The exterior is constructed from snecked ashlar with polished dressings, and there is a prominent string course between the floors. The house has sash windows and stacks that are inset over bases, topped with slate roofs. The main front has three bays, with an advanced central entrance bay. The overall plan is basically L-shaped, with the detailing continuing on the flanks. The rear walls are rendered, including a square bay that likely contains a staircase in the re-entrant angle, resembling a Scots 17th-century house, and features a bell-cast roof integrated with the main roof. Additionally, there is a long and low service range.
