Former Gardener's House, Heriot Watt University Creche, Riccarton Estate, Edinburgh

The Former Gardener's House at Heriot Watt University Creche in the Riccarton Estate, Edinburgh, is a single-storey rectangular-plan building designed in the Tudoresque style, probably by William Burn around 1823. It features a lean-to bay on the south side and is constructed from squared and snecked honey-coloured sandstone ashlar, with squared and snecked rubble at the rear. The building has droved margins, chamfered reveals, a hoodmould, a base course, and broad eaves.

On the southwest elevation, there is a broad gable that is jerkin-headed at the apex and advanced off-centre to the right. This elevation includes a tripartite window and a door located in the left return of the gable. To the outer right, there is a lower lean-to bay with a bipartite window. A verandah is positioned to the left of the gable, supported by four cast-iron colonettes, and features a bipartite and a single window in the southwest wall.

The northeast elevation consists of three symmetrical bays, with a single lean-to bay to the outer left. The entrance bay is advanced at the centre, topped with a jerkin-headed pediment, and features a two-leaf flush-panelled door with a six-pane fanlight, flanked by windows. The lean-to bay to the outer left has a boarded door with a three-pane letterbox fanlight and a small window to the outer left.

The side elevation displays a gable with a bipartite window at the centre and a jerkin-headed apex. The building has diamond-pane timber casement windows and a twelve-pane sash and case window on the northeast side, all beneath grey slate roofing and broad overhanging eaves.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1992. The property is enclosed by a low rubble boundary wall with ashlar coping, which supports iron lattice trellis railings topped with fleur-de-lis finials, located immediately to the north of the cottage.
