73-77 Main Street, Newmilns

73-77 Main Street in Newmilns is an 18th-century building, likely from the last quarter of that century. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring four bays on the first floor with original stone rybats. The facade is smooth-rendered. The ground floor has been altered in at least two phases, possibly during the late 19th to early 20th century. It includes a central doorway, which may be original, flanked by three-bay shops with enlarged windows that have projecting stone sills. The shop on the right has a panelled two-leaf door and windows with glazing bars at the upper level, while the shop on the left features smaller windows. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with small slates, and it has a pair of swept-roofed dormers with slated cheeks, a central skylight, and skews, along with rebuilt end stacks. The rear wall is made of coursed unsquared whin rubble with ashlar dressings and has three skylights above. The interior is neglected but retains some early or original features, including timber staircase balusters and plasterwork.
