Description
Ducat Tower, located on Castle Street in Newmilns, is a building that belonged to the Campbells of Loudoun. Towards the end of the 17th century, it was occupied by Captain Inglis and served as a prison for the Covenanters. Currently, it is part of an inn and includes stabling with hay lofts above. The entrance is on the ground floor, with a wheel-stair adjacent to it. The exterior features some unusual elements, including two string-courses and a base. The doorway has been enlarged, but the panel above it is original. The tower appears to have originally had an open parapet with bartisans at the corners, all supported by a series of continuous corbelling. Gargoyles for water drainage remain on the south-east bartisan.
