Description
The West Lodge and Gates form part of Kilmarnock Cemetery, dating from 1875. The lodge is a single-storey building with an attic, constructed in a Scots Baronial style with a T-plan layout, and includes a conical terminal tower and gateway. It is built of bull-faced red sandstone, featuring a projecting base course and crowstepped gables.
The west elevation, facing the road, has an advanced crowstepped gable on the left with chamfered angles that corbel outwards above the ground floor. It features a single light window, a bipartite window in the centre, and a single light window to the right. A decorative shield rests above the bipartite window, accompanied by a hoodmould. The north elevation incorporates a square entrance porch to the left with a timber door and moulded stone surround. A two-storey conical tower is set back to the right, with five windows to the upper stage. The rear (east) elevation mirrors the west, with a similar advanced gable and window arrangement including a shield. The south elevation exhibits a crowstepped gable with a wallhead chimney.
Internally, the lodge has been renovated, while the terminal tower remains unused. Most windows are replacements consisting of small quartered upper panes and larger lower panes, except for those in the upper floor of the conical tower, which are single-pane replacements. The roof is of grey slate, the conical towers are covered with fish-scale slates. A weather vane tops the domestic tower, and a decorative finial surmounts the terminal tower. Lead flashing is present on the towers, gulleys, and gables, while partially concealed painted cast-iron rainwater goods are also visible. The stacks are stone with projecting moulded neck copes and single cans.
The gateways are linked to the lodge by a moulded doorway with a hoodmould and date panel. The carriage arch has a segmental head with reel and bead moulding, bearing the inscription “KILMARNOCK CEMETERY” on the west elevation, and featuring a carved stone Kilmarnock coat of arms above a battlemented parapet (with the inscription "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE" on the east elevation). An adjacent blind conical terminal tower has gargoyles, gun loops, and rainwater spouts, with an entrance door on the north side and a plaque bearing initials "AA". The vehicular access is provided by a pair of decorative wrought-iron gates with a crest inset into each leaf, and spike-headed dog bars. Plain wrought iron gates with pointed head dog bars provide pedestrian access.
