Description
3 Rustic Place in Dundee is a building designed by William Alexander, constructed between 1870 and 1875. It features six tenements across three storeys, with a basement and attic, and rises four storeys due to the slope of Constitution Road. The structure is made of ashlar and coursed bull-faced rubble, with painted dressings. The ground floor has architraved and corniced windows, while the basement, first, and second floors have margined and keystoned windows. There is a linking cill course on the first floor and corbelled cills throughout.
On the elevation facing Dudhope Street, numbers 3 and 5 each have five bays, with a central entrance that has a consoled and pedimented doorpiece approached by steps, and blind windows above. There is a ground floor band course. Number 1 has an advanced six-bay façade with an off-centre consoled and pedimented entrance. The windows include single and bipartite designs, and there is a slightly recessed triple-light quadrant angle with a semi-conical flat-topped pavilion roof. A bipartite round-arched dormer is also present.
The elevation facing Constitution Road has five and six bays, with detailing similar to that of Dudhope Street. Number 65 features a corniced shopfront on the ground floor.
At the rear, there are ground floor corniced and consoled doorpieces. The building has tall shouldered and corniced wallhead and ridge stacks, and a slate roof with small canted dormers. The windows are sash and case with a 2 and 4-pane glazing pattern, although some have been altered. Inside, there is a little altered stair supported by cast-iron columns, and the property includes wrought-iron railings.
