Description

20-24 Constitution Road in Dundee is a group of six neo-Tudor tenements designed by William Alexander between 1867 and 1870. The buildings are three stories with a basement and attic, rising to a full four stories on Constitution Road. They are constructed of coursed rubble with painted ashlar dressings and feature a bull-faced basement.

On the Barrack Road elevation, numbers 2 and 4 have depressed arches at the ground and first floors, linked by a hoodmould at the first floor. The second floor features shouldered arches, some with corbelled balconies. The outer canted and shallow rectangular bays appear at the first and second floors. Numbers 6-10 have a similar design but lack the depressed arches. The canted end bays at numbers 8 and 10 rise through each floor. Large shouldered wallhead stacks are located at the centers of numbers 4-10. The buildings also have two-light depressed arched dormers.

The elevation facing Constitution Road is styled similarly, with a three-light quadrant corner. It has four bays to the left, alternating between blind and open. The southernmost three bays have different floor levels, with gablet dormerheads positioned between the wallhead stacks. Two bays are slightly advanced and feature a ground floor gabletted main door. The roofs are slate with ridge and wallhead stacks. The windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern. Wrought-iron railings with cast-iron finials line Barrack Road, while modern railings are present on Constitution Road.
