Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, built in 1904 by Thomas M Cappon, is a rectangular-plan church with Gothic detailing, featuring a tower and a later addition at the east end. A subsequent addition was made in the later 20th century. The church is constructed of facing bond red engineering brick with pink ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof.
The architectural style incorporates a base course at the west front, a string course at the first floor level and at the point where the tower is divided into stages, a gablet-coped gable, three crowsteps at the eaves, single and two-light pointed-arch windows, and belfry openings. The west front features a stepped three-light design, continuous chamfered cills, hoodmoulds, and decorative label stops (linked at the two-light windows). Narrow, square-headed windows are found at the stair tower, with ashlar lintels and chamfered cills. Buttresses define the bays on the north and south sides. Deep eaves are present with exposed rounded rafter ends.
The west elevation showcases a three-stage tower on the left, alongside a recessed, four-stage octagonal stair tower with crenellated parapets. A pointed-arch doorway is framed by a moulded doorhead and an ogival hoodmould, with a single-story angle buttress to the left and a splayed buttress to the left re-entrant adjoining the stair tower. An ashlar niche at the second stage contains a statue of the Madonna and Child, sheltered by a traceried canopy, and has a window on the left return. The third stage features a large, two-light louvred belfry opening, with a single opening on the left return. The stair tower has windows at each stage, topped by a finialled spirelet. To the right of the tower is a slightly advanced gable. The ground floor of this gable features three single windows, while the gallery level is dominated by a large, stepped three-light window, flanked by buttresses terminating in gablets at the label-stop level. A small, stepped three-light window sits at the gable apex, crowned by a cross finial. The later addition’s style and materials mirror the original, with a base course and a blank, canted east elevation, topped by a platform roof.
The south elevation presents a segmental-arched door at the left, followed by two bays each containing a two-light window. An advanced bay to the far right incorporates a door and a cat-slide roof that sweeps downwards, continuing with a lower four-bay addition to the outer right.
The north elevation includes three bays of the original building, each with a two-light window, and a cat-slide roof that sweeps down. A four-bay addition is on the left, with similar windows (and without buttresses).
The interior was remodelled in the later 20th century, and incorporates a gallery and stained glass windows at the west end, as well as a carillon housed within the tower.
