Description
Burnside Mill, located on Mylne's East Wynd in Dundee, is a jute mill built around 1866-67 by possibly Urquhart Lindsay and Co. This three-storey and attic structure features seven bays and is constructed from rubble. The east elevation has seven bays, with the northernmost windows blocked on each floor and a hoist added. The southernmost windows have been altered for escape, while the remaining windows are wooden-framed top-hoppers. The west elevation has a band course over the second floor and is similar in design but has not been altered, featuring smaller windows at the ground floor. The south elevation has a three-bay gable that has been remodeled, with windows at the attic floor. The north elevation is made of brick to accommodate an unfinished extension.
Attached to the mill is a two-storey gabled brick office and sample room, which includes an oriel window to the west and a small stack. This section dates from the late 19th century and is built on a rubble base from the 1820s.
Inside, the mill features an iron frame with brick arches, and the second-floor ceiling has concrete transverse arches that likely replaced a wooden floor around the 1920s to 1930s. The roof is a combination of cast and wrought iron ties.
