Description

Douglas Mill, located on Douglas Street in Dundee, is a tow or jute mill built around 1834-1836. This two-storey and attic structure features a ten-by-three bay layout, constructed with an iron frame and rubble. A double-pitched preparing room was added to the north around 1846-1851. The south elevation has seven ground floor windows, four of which have been altered to doors. The eighth bay includes a tall engine house window that originally rose through the first floor but has since been converted into two windows. The tenth bay is the stone base of a chimney that is integrated into the mill and rises through the eaves, although the brick top has been removed. The east gable has a door inserted at ground level and three first floor windows, two of which were blocked when a mechanics shop was added, though that has now been removed. The west gable features two ground floor windows and a door, along with one first floor window and an attic loading door. The north elevation includes two round-headed bays for the boiler house, a door leading to the stairs, and an engine.

The single-storey preparing room has two doors and a blocked window on the east side. Iron columns support an iron beam and the wall of the mill. The first floor has three doors that were formerly connected by a platform and six windows.

Inside, the mill was rebuilt in the 1850s and features an iron frame with brick arches, cast-iron parabolic beams, and wrought-iron ties supported by iron columns with bulbous capitals. The floors are stone flagged. The boiler house, located on the east side of the ground floor, has two fluted Egyptian columns, a narrower beam from 1835, and evidence of engine fittings. The old engine house had a wooden floor and a stone spiral stair. The roof is supported by curved cast-iron trusses on short iron columns with wooden boarding on the sides. The preparing room also features a curved cast-iron roof.
