Description
St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, built in 1872 and opened in 1874, with the attached presbytery completed in 1876-7, represents an example of early Gothic architecture designed by Alexander Ellis and Robert G Wilson. It is the fourth Roman Catholic church in Dundee, originating in 1857 as a division from St Andrew's, initially meeting in a weaving shed before establishing itself as a separate parish in 1868.
The church itself is constructed of coursed rubble stone in a simple cruciform plan. The south gable is crow-stepped and topped with a finial, featuring paired lancet windows and a vesica, along with an iron cross finial. The east elevation features a gable over the entrance, with two wooden doors, wrought-iron hinges, and a trumeau incorporating a small triple lancet within a hood-mould. Three lancets are positioned above, the central one serving as a niche for a statue of St Joseph. The nave is characterized by three large triple lancets, while a small porch with a steep slate roof sits in the angle of the transepts. A large transept gable displays triple lancets flanked by single lancets and decorative pinnacled kneelers and crowsteps. The three-sided gabled sanctuary has two-light plate traceried windows under gablets and originally contained a central rose window, which was later removed to accommodate a baldacchino.
The interior underwent significant alterations in 1981-3, though a notable open timber roof, stained glass windows, an 1889 organ, and a spectacular baldacchino and reredos by Pugin and Pugin (1900) remain. The reredos stands over an alabaster High Altar; unfortunately, original stencilling has been lost. Original cast-iron railings on a stone wall, along with stone gate piers surmounted by gas lamps, mark the boundary.
The presbytery, also designed by Ellis and Wilson, is a two-storey building with a basement and attic, constructed of coursed rubble. It features an off-centre pointed arched entrance with a hood-mould, varied fenestration including a shouldered tripartite window with leaded glass and a central bipartite window under a relieving arch. A prominent central wallhead stack exhibits crowsteps, a small hood-moulded lancet, and an incised cross positioned between two gabled dormers. Gable end stacks and a slate roof complete the exterior. Adjacent to the presbytery is a former convent, adapted from a circa 1830s weaving factory manager's house, displaying an asymmetrical east elevation, a later concrete porch, and a rebuilt brick wallhead stack. The church and associated buildings remain in ecclesiastical use.
