Description

This is a public house, built around 1815-1821, with later additions around 1860 and 1880. It was originally constructed as a villa for J Calman, a shipbuilder. The building later passed into the ownership of Edward and then J K Caird, who were jute barons and benefactors.

The building is two storeys high with a basement, constructed of coursed rubble. The three-bay north elevation features a central bay that is slightly advanced. The original Ionic columned doorpiece has been obscured by a later porch with an arch over an enlarged doorway, and windows in the side panels. The first floor has three windows. The ground floor windows are set back, with a continuous sill course running along the first floor level. A main cornice incorporates a central blocking course.

The south-east elevation is also two storeys and basement, with three bays, and includes two ground floor oriels added in 1880 by Charles and Leslie Ower. There are two dormers, as well as wallhead and end stacks. The roof is piended and covered in slate. The windows are sash and case, although the glazing patterns have been altered.

Unusual bowed and decorated wrought-iron railings are present on the southwest side. A former sea wall is located to the south. An advertisement from January 4, 1822, offered the property for sale through the architect David Neave.
