YMCA Main Block, 151 Brook Street, Broughty Ferry, Dundee

This property comprises a single-storey schoolroom and a two-storey house, dating to circa 1825. The buildings were originally erected as a school by Thomas Erskine of Linthlathen during the 1820s and were gifted to the Broughty Ferry YMCA, which was established in 1866, in 1874 by their president, Alexander Jefferson Buist.

The building is constructed of coursed dark rubble with polished ashlar margins, and has a slate roof. The south elevation features the single-storey schoolroom set back on the left, with three sash and case windows—these windows have plate glass in the lower sash and two panes in the upper. There is one blocked window to the right, and a gable to the left with a coped stack. To the right of the schoolroom is a slightly later two-storey house. This house has margined angles, a base course, a cill course at the first floor level, an eaves course, coped skews, and moulded stacks. The windows are sash and case windows with 12 panes per sash. A central doorpiece features consoles and a block pediment with a fanlight above; the flanking windows have bracketted cills and moulded margins. Affixed large letters spelling ‘YMCA’ are positioned above the first-floor windows. The north elevation is altered with modern additions at ground floor, but retains three 12-pane sash and case windows at first floor.
