YMCA Main Block, 151 Brook Street, Broughty Ferry, Dundee

This building comprises a single-storey former schoolroom and a two-storey schoolhouse, dating to circa 1825. The schoolroom, set back on the left, is single-story and four bays wide, constructed of dark rubble with polished ashlar margins, and has a slate roof. It features three sash and case windows with plate glass lower sashes and two-pane upper sashes, and one blocked window to the right. A gable with a coped stack is on the left. The two-storey schoolhouse, slightly later in date, is three bays wide and situated to the right. It is built with similarly coursed dark rubble with polished ashlar margins, and features a base course, cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, coped skews, and moulded stacks. The windows have 12-pane sash and case glazing. A central doorpiece is ornamented with consoles and a block pediment incorporating a fanlight, while the flanking windows feature bracketted cills and moulded margins. Above, three margined windows at the first floor are flanked by large affixed letters "YMCA." The north elevation has modern additions at ground floor level, with three 12-pane sash and case windows at the first floor. The buildings were originally erected as a school by Thomas Erskine of Linthlathen during the 1820s. They were gifted to the Broughty Ferry YMCA (established in 1866) in 1874 by Alexander Jefferson Buist, then president of the YMCA.
