Description

86 Victoria Road in Dundee is a four-storey tenement building designed by J Graham Firley of McCulloch and Fairley in 1877. It is built in the style of John Lessel's Edinburgh City Improvement Trust, using rubble coursers with ashlar dressings and moulded string courses, with the string course at the third floor stepping.

The elevation facing Victoria Road features ground floor shops supported by cast-iron columns, partially covered by modern fascia, along with a pend. Above, there are four windows and an octagonal corner bay over the first and third bays, with the third bay corbelled out at the first floor to create a segmentally arched recess above the first-floor window, which rises into a crow-stepped gable with a cruciform stack. The third-floor window has a stepped hoodmould with a panel, while the first, second, and fourth bays have segment-headed hoodmoulds. The third-floor corbelled dormers have segmental arches and tympanum ornaments, and the corner octagon culminates in a prismatic roof with finialled gablet lucarne dormers and a weather vane.

The frontage to Forebank Road consists of five windows, with the first and second bays being bipartite. This elevation mirrors the treatment of the Victoria Road frontage but lacks the shops. The corbelled and gabled bay treatment of the third bay is repeated at the first bay, although the top course and cornice of the chimneyhead are missing. The ground floor features a stepped segmental arched hoodmould over three bays to the right, along with a corbelled wallhead stack.

The rear of the building is plain, with single-light windows, canted dormers, and wallhead stacks. The roofs are slate, and the windows are sash and case, featuring a two-pane glazing pattern at the front and an eight-pane pattern at the rear.
